SubC Imaging awarded contract with Innovative Solutions Canada to test new towed camera system

SubC Imaging is proud to announce that we have been awarded a $250,000 contract with the Government of Canada’s Innovative Solutions Canada Testing Stream (ISC-TS), under Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED).

ISC attracts the latest prototypes from across Canada that are not yet available on the market. Previously known as the Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP), the ISC Testing Stream purchases pre-commercial goods/services and allows selected companies to test their innovation with government partners in a real-life setting.

SubC has partnered with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO Gulf and DFO NL) to test two full SubC Towed Camera Systems this fall. Designed for smaller vessels that work in a shallow-water depth of under 500 meters, the Towed Camera System collects digital stills with high-output LED strobes and 4K or HD subsea videos for various marine research purposes such as coastal research, benthic studies, seafloor mapping, and more. It is a time-saving solution that could potentially expand survey areas and reduce the data-to-decision-cycle that guides marine protected area policy.

DFO feels the system could be a cost-effective, compact solution that can be deployed off a small vessel and thus would benefit their research and monitoring activities in coastal benthic ecosystems. Unlike some other sampling options, the system is non-intrusive, which is a valuable attribute for working in Canada’s expanding protected area network.

The complete SubC Tow Camera System comes ready-to-deploy and consists of:

  • Rayfin Coastal camera system with integrated depth sensor

  • SubC Boost-Power Communication (BPC) Technology

  • SubC lightweight aluminum towed frame designed for passive altitude control and heavy compensation

  • An electric winch with up to 410m of Kevlar reinforced tow cable

  • Two Aquorea Mk3 LEDs (strobe and lamp)

  • MantaRay Parallel lasers

  • Altimeter embedded 30Kg clump weight

  • SubC Rayfin camera control software

  • *Coming soon! SubC Presenter post-survey review software
